Non-Surgical Body Contouring: Exploring Advances, Techniques, and Considerations

The Natural Plastic Surgeon Blog

What is a non-surgical BBL, and why are they so popular?

At one point in the last ten years, it seemed like society couldn’t escape the BBL silhouette. Brazilian butt lifts saw an over 90% increase in popularity between 2015 and 2019, with the dramatized hourglass look popping up all over social media feeds, leading to conversations about the safety and practicality of the invasive procedure. Subsequently, non-invasive cosmetic services are becoming higher in demand due to the minimal pain, shortened recovery period, ease, and quick procedural speed. Dr. Barrett Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills performs non-surgical Brazilian butt lifts as a safer and less controversial alternative that offers patients similar results to a traditional BBL without the lengthy downtime or need for intense surgery by utilizing filler instead of liposuction

A non-surgical BBL with filler, also known as a liquid butt lift, allows patients the option to improve the shape and volume of the buttocks. Aside from this being the less dangerous route for a BBL, plastic surgery trends are moving toward a desire for increased contour instead of merely an increase in size. In an interview with Vox on the BBL boom, plastic surgeon Adam Rubinstein noted that he’s noticed this shift in aesthetic preferences, saying, “The people coming in are no longer saying, ‘I want it as big as possible.’ Now they’re saying, ‘I just want it to be round.” Using injectable fillers or fat-melting agents can achieve an enhanced contoured look by smoothing cellulite and reducing the appearance of stretch marks. Non-surgical BBLs can also fill hip dips and increase the size and projection of the buttocks while reducing the appearance of sagging or drooping.

How are liquid butt lifts performed, and how do they compare to traditional BBLs?

The key difference between a traditional BBL and a liquid butt lift is eliminating the need for fat grafting. Suitable candidates for this method are those who want to create a more shapely and fuller appearance without the dramatic look of a surgical BBL. Candidates who desire a BBL but lack sufficient fat deposits are also ideal candidates for liquid butt lifts. Patients should be aware prior to surgery that the results are not permanent and require multiple sessions, though the effects can last up to two years or longer. However, with maintenance, the results can last indefinitely. The treatment typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, Depending on the level of correction needed, with patients able to return to normal activities immediately following the injections. The doctor will apply numbing cream before this treatment to ensure comfort in addition to the local anesthetic already within the filler, but mild swelling and bruising are common after the sessions.

Typically, the injector uses either hyaluronic acid-based or poly-L-lactic acid-based fillers for a non-surgical BBL. Dr. Barrett Plastic Surgery uses Sculptra, which is made of the latter and is considered the most effective for immediate and gradual results. When Sculptra is injected into the dermal structure, the absorption of the microparticles stimulates the body to produce more collagen. This excess collagen allows the skin to plump over time, and the injections are strategically placed to create the contour the patient desires. The outcome will become increasingly noticeable over the months following the treatment. Poly-L-lactic acid fillers last about a year longer than hyaluronic-based fillers, lasting up to one year. However, hyaluronic fillers are advantageous for those allergic to poly-L-lactic acid, as hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body. Both are safe, FDA-approved options that add volume, contour, and rejuvenation to the treated area.

Are there any risks for non-surgical BBLs?

Liquid butt lifts are an excellent method for those interested in subtly enhancing their body contour, but they cannot provide as drastic results as fat grating, so patients should have realistic expectations. As with any cosmetic procedure, there are still risks, no matter how minimally invasive. Complications are rare but can occur; there is a possibility of the filler settling in an unfavorable way and a risk that the needle could cause broken blood vessels. Symptoms of a severe complication include nausea, yellow drainage, shortness of breath, fever, or dizziness. It’s vital for patients interested in a non-surgical butt lift to consult a qualified surgeon — finding an experienced injector is the best way to reduce the likelihood of complications significantly. Finding a board-certified provider like Dr. Barrett with a history of satisfied patients makes a huge difference.

Why should I consider liquid butt lifts as an option? What are the next steps?

There are some advantages to traditional BBLs, like permanent results and dramatic transformations, but liquid butt lifts are, without a doubt, the safer option. Without any incisions, there is zero risk of scarring or infection. They also require virtually no downtime, unlike a traditional lift, where patients spend weeks in recovery. It’s unnecessary for patients to undergo general anesthesia; at most, the injector will use local anesthesia during the process. Emerging technology is continuing to create safer and less invasive options for body contour procedures. As we move toward a more democratized era of cosmetic surgery, non-surgical BBLs will only become more customizable and precise. Long surgeries with rigorous healing periods are no longer the only way to achieve a patient’s body goals.
