Advancements and Innovations in Fat Transfer to Breast Procedures

The Natural Plastic Surgeon Blog

Finding a surgeon who specializes in the advanced methods of breast augmentation is essential when choosing to enhance your breasts, as technology is evolving in tandem with new trends and the desires of patients. Breast augmentation remains a classic procedure, but over the years, doctors have found safer and more versatile ways to enlarge and modify the breasts. Fat transfers to the breasts are one of the popular modern methods of breast augmentation, as they allow patients to transform their chest with more naturally looking and feeling results than implants. A lot of people are attracted to this method as aesthetic preferences are moving away from the exaggerated look of large, round implants.

Originally used as a technique for reconstructive surgery, fat transfers to the breasts for cosmetic purposes have grown in popularity over the years, not just for the natural results but for the dual advantage of liposuction. By using cutting-edge techniques in liposuction, surgeons can graft fat from specific areas of the body and inject it into the breasts. Patients often choose areas where they desire less body fat, like the abdomen, hips, inner thighs, or back. Dr. Barrett provides pristine fat transfers to the breasts in Beverly Hills by specializing in the revolutionary S.A.F.E liposuction technique, which is the best way to preserve the maximum amount of fat cells during the grafting process, thus achieving optimal results.

What is the process for a fat transfer to breasts?

Patients will work together with their surgeon during the initial consultation to identify individual goals and choose the appropriate fat grafting sites to create a personalized procedure plan. During the operation, the surgeon uses the S.A.F.E liposuction technique to loosen fat cells prior to their removal, maintaining as many fat cells as possible. Then, a small tube called a cannula is inserted through a minor incision to harvest the fat. The cells are purified before injecting this fat into the breasts to separate any cellular debris. Once the cells are ready, multiple injections are placed in the breast strategically to create a symmetrical shape and increased volume. Since the cannula is so small, it reduces the risk of bruising around the injection sites. To further minimize scarring, the surgeon uses a unique layered suturing technique. The entire operation lasts around three hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

What is an ideal candidate for a fat transfer to breasts?

The ideal candidate has enough excess fat to harvest and desires a natural look, as fat transfers can only increase the breasts by one-half cup size. Those who would like to increase their cup size further may need to undergo multiple fat grafting sessions or consider combining the procedure with implants. Some patients also pair the procedure with a breast lift to achieve their goals. After the surgery, patients can expect to see a difference immediately, with the entire recovery from the fat transfers taking around four days and the final results occurring within three months. During recovery, patients will need to take time away from work, childcare, and pet care with a family member assisting them home from the surgery. As with most liposuction procedures, pain and swelling around the injection site are minimal. Patients should abstain from strenuous exercise for at least two weeks as the fat cells settle and the skin heals the wounds. It’s also best to avoid sleeping on the stomach and wearing restrictive clothing outside of any recommended compression garments.

Fat transfer vs. Traditional implants

Although the results may not be as dramatic as traditional implants, there are a slew of benefits to natural breast augmentation outside of the ability to sculpt multiple areas of the body through liposuction. Patients can expect their breasts to feel softer and less synthetic than with implants and maintain a sleek tear-drop shape. Ditching implants also eliminates the risk of Breast Implant Illness altogether; many people with breast implants have reported autoimmune symptoms from having a foreign object inserted into their body. Breast implants also need to be replaced over the years, and there is the risk of capsular contracture after surgery. However, there is still a possibility of complications with fat transfers, including infection of the injection sites, fat necrosis, and hematoma formation.

The results from fat transfer breast augmentations are permanent, though a small portion of cells die after injection, leading some patients to do another round of fat grafting. It’s also important for patients to be as close to their goal weight before the procedure as possible since future weight loss can cause a reduction in fat cells in the entire body. However, a study shows that 92% of patients and 89% of surgeons were satisfied with the final results. Overall, natural breast augmentations carry a high satisfaction rate, with both the pros and cons of fat transfers surpassing the risks associated with implants.
